Ivan Feherdy was born in Kecskemét, Hungary. Once the
revolution marched into his life, he knew it was time to leave all he’d known, to begin a new life in Canada. This is where our book begins.
Ivan came to Canada in 1957. He graduated from McGill
University in the early 60s, and started working for the City of Montréal as an urban planner. He met Valéria (Vali) and they married in 1964. Some of Ivan’s recollections are memories that evoke our shared experience, fellow Montréalers know well Expo 67, the Storm of a Century in 1971, the 1976 Olympics. It is interesting to read about these through Ivan’s voice. His stories of travelling add yet another dimension.
It’s funny how the memory works, slipping from one event
to another like flipping randomly through pages of a well read book. Ivan’s words have a slightly different rhythm from someone born in Canada, his words are accented with his Hungarian roots, his family life, their travels, his warmth and kind heart.
