Local historian Robert N Wilkins has written a time capsule from 1901, based on newspaper articles of the day from La Presse and the Montreal Star. You can imagine the city developing the character we now know with such familiarity... and within a mix of events still with us, like flooding, royal visits, smallpox (well, we're close...) and everything in between. A fascinating read, photos from the microfilm archives at McGill.
Robert will have his two previous books on hand as well. He is well-versed on the stories that make Montreal what it is today.

Corner Studio's other two spring/summer releases are also local authors, both from Lachine Qc, friends from early days! Don Houston first wrote about his youth in the previously published A Boomer in Lachine; Growing Up in the 1950s. (Shoreline, 2020)
Alan Wright's book for this launch is also concerning days of his youth in Competition & Community; The Wright Stuff in The City of Sports. It`s a comprehensive look at the sporting life of Lachine through the 1950s and 60s. Alan also has a chapter dedicated to female athletes in Lachine at the time. There was much dedication from the community, locals volunteering time organizing and coaching. You will come across many familiar names from high-level sports that had their start here.
Each author recreates their hometown memories with their friends - including each other. It`s a book launch saluting friendship, for sure. I love the connection, and how their stories are of the same era in the 1950s and on, but individual styles and collections. Now Don`s present book he is launching is a continuation of those early times in Lachine, but he now is taking us on a trip of a lifetime as a Cuso volunteer -
A Boomer in Kenya; A Cuso Volunteer Experience in the 1960s. It`s an expedition with unexpected turns and a variety of interesting and kind characters including Don`s wife, Cheryl, fellow volunteers from UK and elsewhere, and the Kenyans themselves, with rich stories to tell. What a way to celebrate their early days together!
